Author Chris Crutcher Visits TAHS
Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.
On October 22, in cooperation with the Massanutten Regional Library and Harrisonburg High School, the Turner Ashby High School library hosted noted young adult author, Chris Crutcher, for a day of presentations for, and interactions with, students, faculty/staff and invited guests.
He spoke to TAHS and BHS students during three assemblies and attended a luncheon in the library. This luncheon was possible with help from PTA members.
The following is the introduction for Chris Crutcher at the 2nd assembly for TAHS and BHS Creative Writing students. It was written by Jessica Gilchrist, and delivered by Jamie Rose, TAHS Creative Writing students.
The lives of teenagers today are bombarded with issues young adult minds are unprepared for. Often, unknowingly, we back ourselves into these situations, placing the weight of a decision made for a lifetime of wisdom on the shoulders of someone who respectively has been alive for mere seconds. In this flood of issues, we find light in those who have emerged from similar situations with insight. From their growth, we find comfort, direction, and confidence in our choices. We are no longer alone. Turner Ashby commends Chris Crutcher for his ability to reach into the lives of teenagers today and provide us with role models to follow. The characters in his books are teenagers like us who face the same challenges. They embrace their duties and emerge better people. We can learn from their courage and struggles. But their prevalent sense of duty could not be communicated to us without Chris Crutcher’s talent as a writer. Please give a round of applause to Chris Crutcher as he explains to us the craft of writing.
