MTC Expands
by Marianne LaRocco, MTC Assistant Director
Massanutten Technical Center is growing! On November 1, 2010, they dedicated their new 17,000 square foot addition, the Health and Public Safety Building at the annual Community Open House - the first major expansion at MTC in over 20 years. The public also celebrated the Grand Opening of MTC's new Veterinary Assistant barn. This 2000 square foot barn will be a working lab for MTC Vet Assistant students and will be available to community FFA, Young Farmers and other groups. The heated barn will contain four stalls for animals, a large teaching area with bleachers, a tack room and feed storage. Most of the finish work on the barn was done by MTC students, including Electricity, Carpentry, HVAC, Masonry, and Welding programs.
At the Open House, Mr. Pablo Cuevas, MTC Foundation Chairman, and Dr. Carol Fenn, RCPS Superintendent, gave remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Health and Public Safety Building. The Health and Public Safety Building will house MTC's Health Careers, Nursing, Criminal Justice, and Fire and Rescue programs. The building includes two large labs for Criminal Justice and Fire and Rescue in which they house their police car, fire truck and ambulance.
At the Open House, all 20 MTC High School Career Programs had skill demonstrations in their classrooms. It was a great event attended by more than 300 persons.
