2011 RCPS Spelling Bee To Be Held Feb 7

Twenty-seven students will participate in the Rockingham County Public Schools' annual County-wide Spelling Bee on Monday, Feb. 7, at Mountain View Elementary School. The bee begins at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

“The students who will compete represent the county's elementary and middle schools,” said Janet Wendelken, director of the County Spelling Bee. Wendelken is Director of Instructional Programs for RCPS and Executive Director of the Rockingham Educational Foundation, Inc.

“We are proud of our students as they prepare for the bee,” said Wendelken. Each has won the right to participate by winning their respective school bee." RCPS elementary and middle schools have conducted 19 school bees during November, December and January.

Spelling Bee

The top nine spellers from this bee will go on to compete at the Regional Bee at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5 at the WVPT studios. That bee will be broadcast live at that time. The winner of the regional bee will compete at Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 1 and 2 in Washington, D.C.

The sponsors for the county bee are Rockingham County Public Schools, the Rockingham Educational Foundation, Inc. and the County Council of PTAs. The sponsors for the regional bee are Daily News-Record, WVPT-TV Public Television and the Rockingham District Ruritans. The Ruritans will provide the travel and lodging for the winning student and a parent to the Scripps Bee and will be awarding a laptop computer to the winning student.

There is no charge to attend the county spelling bee, and it is open to the public. The snow date is Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at Mountain View Elementary School.
