Moodle is an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, an online web-based Course Management System (CMS). CMSs give teachers the ability to create course websites and provide controls so that only enrolled students can access them. While you can certainly upload lots of static content to a Moodle course, many Moodle tools, such as forums, chats and wikis, are designed to facilitate dynamic content creation by student participation and collaboration.
Rockingham County has chosen to use Moodle as its CMS because of its “open source” nature. This allows us to install and use it without any license costs now or in the future. Also, Moodle is being used successfully by thousands of schools and universities all over the world. Moodle has the ability to do everything the commercial systems such as Blackboard do but without the high costs associated with commercial CMSs.
